It was a multi-cultural city along the Silk Road facilitating trade and exchange of ideas between eastern and western cultures in the 13th century. Nowadays, the main attraction here is the Erdene Zuu monastery-museum, built from the ruins of Kharkhorum in the 16th century as an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism as the main religion in Mongolia by Avtai Sain Khan. The monastery complex was damaged several times in the past but suffered almost complete destruction during the anti-religion Communist Purge of the 1930s, only a few temples and surrounding walls with stupas remain.
